Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
