The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
