Senate Greenlights Legislation to Release Epstein Records

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of official records associated with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a almost unanimous vote in the lower house and a change of position by the president and his GOP allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a case that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.

Unanimous Passage in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.

The public have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next heads to Trump for his approval. He indicated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Although Trump has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the past few days, and said he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.

Response

Opposition lawmakers, along with survivors of Epstein and their representatives who were watching from a House gallery, applauded after the bill was approved. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would disclose specific data of people, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
