Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
