Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
