British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
